In an any workplace there will be many different experiences and perspectives – we each see the world in a different way. This means we react in our own way to situations, which will affect the relationships we have with those around us at work.
This diversity of experience and thinking is a good thing, but it can sometimes lead to misunderstanding and conflict between people. Some conflict can be positive, such as a healthy bit of competition to meet goals. But negative conflict, like personality clashes or bullying, can undermine teamwork and be harmful to individuals.
Conflict in the workplace can be emotionally draining, and can often result in a toxic workplace. The cost of unresolved workplace conflict can be measured in many ways, with The Confederation of British Industry estimating it at £33 billion each year; but ultimately there is a human cost that can have lasting consequences at the emotional, personal and career level for those involved.
Most of us spend a large portion of our waking hours at work, so the quality of our working environment and relationships has a significant impact on our wellbeing.
Please join us for an introduction to Proactively Managing Conflict in the Workplace, where we will consider the causes of conflict, handling incidents at an early stage and understanding how our own experiences can contribute.
We’ll look at:
- Unpacking the challenges that generate workforce friction
- Understanding our own prejudices and biases (conscious and unconscious)
- Defusing strategies for confidently handling tricky situations
